Selecting material for piping and its components requires some knowledge in material characteristics in order to ensure that piping and its component must be suitable for the flow medium and the proposed operating condition of temperature and pressure so that would be safely operated during the intended design life of the piping.
Pipe material must also has got the mechanical strength appropriate for the long term service, able to sustain operational variable such as thermal cycling or mechanical cycling, as well as considering the environmental condition surrounding the pipe and its components.
One other thing needs to be considered is the fabricability characteristics such as the ability to be bent or formed, suitability for welding or other methods of joining, ease of heat treatment, just to name a few.
