In the history of human life that has been going on for tens of thousands of years, the art of designing and building a network of Piping has been known for centuries. Initially, the piping system was widely used by the community for irrigation purposes in agriculture, using pipes made from bamboo, as was done by people in China approximately between 3000 and 2000 BC. Along with the advancement of human culture, the wider the use of pipes in various aspects of their lives. But it was only in the 19th century, the developments in the field of pipe technology occurred very rapidly.

Meanwhile, the discussion in terms of the problem of pipe expansion when flowing high-temperature fluid is still very simple. The approach to stress analysis calculation methods further demonstrated progress when R. H. Tingey in his article entitled “Method of Calculation Thermal Expansion Stresses in Piping” in 1934 introduced what is known as the “virtual center of gravity or elastic center”.

The design and construction of various piping systems involve understanding of piping materials, piping layout, pipe support, and piping stress analysis, as well as understanding of fabrication and installation, examinations, and testing and inspection.

According to Piping Handbook by Mohinder L. Nayyar, we can call piping when pipe sections joined with fittings, valves, and other mechanical equipment and properly supported by hangers and supports. So, pipe is one element or part of piping. Another part is called as pipe components or pipe fittings, flanges, gasket, bolt and nuts, valves and other accessories, and pipe support.

In this course, we will learn about all of stuff related to piping systems starting with pipe material, pipe components or pipe fittings, valves and pipe supports. As for piping stress, it will present into different course with title as: Introduction to Piping Stress Analysis.
