In the history of human life that has been going on for tens of thousands of years, the art of designing and building a network of Piping has been known for centuries. Initially, the piping system was widely used by the community for irrigation purposes in agriculture, using pipes made from bamboo, as was done by people in China approximately between 3000 and 2000 BC. Along with the advancement of human culture, the wider the use of pipes in various aspects of their lives.

But it was only in the 19th century, the developments in the field of pipe technology occurred very rapidly. However, the discussion in terms of the problem of pipe expansion when flowing high-temperature fluid is still very simple. The approach to stress analysis calculation methods further demonstrated progress when R. H. Tingey in his article with title of “Method of Calculation Thermal Expansion Stresses in Piping” in 1934 introduced what is known as the “virtual center of gravity or elastic center”.

One of the milestones in the development of stress analysis calculations was when the engineering department of the Standard Oil Co (Indiana) Company, presented in the form of an internal company report in 1932, which essentially said that the form coefficient of the additional planar was a derivative of the basic form through the process of permutation of the circle from the coordinate axis.

It was later featured in the first edition of the book “Design of Piping Systems” by The M. W. Kellogg Company in 1941. In this book, it is also reported that in addition to a purely technical approach to analysis, in 1945 the grapho-analytical method was introduced by S. Crocker and A. McCutchan in the book Piping Handbook published by McGraw-Hill Book Co, New York.

The design and construction of various piping systems involve understanding of piping materials, piping layout, pipe support, and piping stress analysis, as well as understanding of fabrication and installation, examinations, and testing and inspection. According to Piping Handbook by Mohinder L. Nayyar, we can call piping when pipe sections joined with fittings, valves, and other mechanical equipment and properly supported by hangers and supports. So, pipe is one element or part of piping

In this course, we will be learning about piping engineering for Oil and Gas application, starting with piping material, pipe fittings, pipe flanges, pipe support, and also piping stress analysis. We will also be introduced into piping codes normally used in our works as Piping Engineer.
